Mangrove Reforestation Campaign – Restoring Coastal Ecosystems

The Faculty of Natural Resources at CITYCOT University, in collaboration with its administration and students, has launched a meaningful environmental initiative focused on restoring degraded coastal ecosystems through a Mangrove Reforestation Campaign.

This campaign centers on the planting and conservation of mangrove trees (locally known as Showrada), which play a vital role in supporting both marine and terrestrial life. Mangroves serve as natural habitats for diverse species, protect coastlines from erosion, and contribute significantly to climate change mitigation by absorbing carbon dioxide.

As part of this initiative, the university has established a Mangrove Nursery, where over 5,000 seedlings are being cultivated to support ongoing and future planting efforts. This nursery serves as a sustainable source for expanding mangrove forests along the coastline.
The first phase of the project was successfully implemented at Khooriga Ceelaayo, where 200 mangrove trees have already been planted. Plans are underway to scale up this effort to reach 1,500 trees in the near future, further strengthening the coastal environment.

This project reflects CITYCOT University’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and community development. Through continuous efforts like this, the university aims to build a healthier ecosystem and promote long-term conservation of natural resources.
